"This was our first time developing a 5-year plan.  In addition to getting the work done, it was important for our board and staff to really understand the process, and for us to build an internal culture that is more oriented to strategic thinking and planning.  We needed a consultant who could facilitate that change and work with us to define and then achieve our outcomes.  HunterKemper provided guidance and support every step of the way.  We always knew where we were in the process and where we were headed.  They helped break it down into manageable pieces."

The RAND Corporation, known by some as America’s first think tank, conducts research on a wide array of topics globally. In 2008, we partnered with their Health division, which accounts for $54 million of research annually, to conduct a study to engage key constituents with the purpose of developing positioning messages and the Case for Support for fundraising. The work provided a new basis for considering the structure of the fundraising program and has resulted in strategic changes. This year we developed the Case for Support for RAND Health to raise funds for its Comprehensive National Health Care Reform project (www.randcompare.org).

We have conducted marketing assessments and branding efforts for a number of organizations and utilize our education and experience in the areas of strategic communication and journalism in all of our work with clients.

Communication, Branding & Case Development Services

We have provided comprehensive campaign services for a dozen organizations and have exceeded goal in every campaign for which we have served as counsel. Fundraising initiatives have included an endowment campaign for Leadership Florida (www.leadershipflorida.org), the statewide leadership development program operated out of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, raising funds to build new wings for surgery and OB-GYN services at Park Ridge Health (www.parkridgehealth.org) near Asheville and funding the purchase and consolidation of emergency shelter and administrative services for Helpmate, Inc (www.helpmateonline.org), the domestic violence agency serving Buncombe County. We continued our work with domestic violence organizations as one of three consultants selected to work on a statewide pilot program funded by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (www.zsr.org).

We have conducted marketing assessments and branding efforts for a number of organizations and utilize our education and experience in the areas of strategic communication and journalism in all of our work with clients.

We have written more than two dozen cases for support and conducted more than a dozen planning studies. Assessment of fundraising programs and analyzing donor data is a particular strength of HunterKemper Consulting. We’ve conducted nearly 50 Development Audits, and our Donor Strategy Map™ tool has helped many organizations significantly increase annual giving. After exceeding goal in a recent capital campaign for MANNA FoodBank, a private, not for profit service organization that links the food industry with 255 partner agencies in 16 counties of Western North Carolina (www.mannafoodbank.org) we recently facilitated the development of a 5-year strategic plan.

Fundraising Services

We have worked with the global United Methodist Church to envision a denominational campaign in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and others to mobilize more than eight million Methodists to make a long-term commitment to end malaria. Through this work we helped impel the leadership of the church towards a stronger, global vision for health related ministry and helped forge relationships with the United Nations Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—including securing a $5 million lead gift towards an overall $75 million global health campaign. We developed the case that presented the Global Health Initiative to leadership. In addition, during Elizabeth Hunter served as the Executive Director of the Foundation for United Methodist Communications for three years during which time the foundation raised funds to establish 14 centers of communication in countries across Africa.

In 2010 we began working with Playing for Change Foundation to strengthen and grow their organization. This work has ranged from policy and board development to creating a strategic vision for the next 3-5 years. In the coming 15 months we will support the Foundation to conduct its first major fundraising campaign in the range of $5 – 8 million. The Foundation is honored to have been given the opportunity, by the Lennon Estate and John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, to utilize Lennon’s name and likeness for a year-long fundraising and awareness campaign that will culminate in a global Playing for Change Day.

Organization Development & Capacity Building Services

We have supported strategic planning for a variety of organizations including a Ronald McDonald House, YWCA, Green Building Council, Art Museum, MANNA FoodBank, and National Farm to School Network. Most of these processes lasted 9 – 12 months and involved gathering information from constituents, synthesizing that information and developing 3 – 5 year plans. We have developed financial models to support sustainability for Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, Kituwah Preservation Education Program and the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, all based in North Carolina. Working with more than a dozen clients in the past 2 years, we have administered in excess of 15,000 electronic surveys. We have experience facilitating community visioning processes and large scale interventions.

Strategic Planning Services

For more than a decade we have worked with Outward Bound, an international organization that serves people of all ages with a special focus on empowering young people. We have conducted two capital campaigns on behalf of Outward Bound programs. We supported a national consolidation of five organizations into one by helping them assess various aspects of their fundraising program; synthesize and analyze the fundraising histories of five independent organizations; understand and respond to the needs of donors and volunteers during the transition; and build a national major giving program to support the newly unified, national Outward Bound organization. Together we have built fundraising systems that continue to engage local leadership while also strengthening the organization's national presence with regard to advocacy and giving. We are currently conducting a planning study for a $13 million capital and endowment campaign for one of Outward Bound’s urban programs.

We have worked with the YWCA of Asheville for more than 10 years. We began with a development audit to build their program in anticipation of the capital campaign. We conducted a feasibility study and a successful $3.3 million campaign, which exceeded the goal by 15% and resulted in a 147% increase in the donor base. Within the last three years we have helped them analyze their data and develop an enhanced annual strategy to capitalize on their centennial celebration year. We also facilitated a strategic planning process to develop a 5-year plan. In 2010 we have helped the organization strengthen and formalize its major giving program, which includes increased engagement by members of the Board of Directors in regular cultivation and solicitation of donors.

"We were extremely pleased with HunterKemper Consulting. Their work was the best I've seen. And it was quick, professional, and moved us ahead exactly as we needed. They provided a strategic and detailed report that continues to guide our work, and they did a wonderful job of getting board members and staff to focus on fundraising."
